I just returned from South Africa where, I was dealt a DNF - quite humbling I can assure you. Just a combination of things made me miss the 5th cut off at 68 KM / 9 hours 30 minutes by 2 minutes (actually shows 4 minutes because I walked when I saw the gates being closed!) Damn disappointing, no doubt however the one thing I gained was the knowledge about "how" to run uphill for 50 + km. I just figured it out at this race a little too late! MUST go back in 2019 to complete the "uphill" Comrades run.
Last year the run was down hill and I can now attest that down hill is so much harder on your body! When I returned last year I was a full 3 months before I was able to run. Today I ran (however slowly) 9 kilometers with ease. I way I feel is night and day to how I felt last year. I will be running only recovery runs for a while however my legs and body feel fine - go figure - well I guess I only did run 68 km not the 88 I was suppose to - ALL the climbing was pretty well done at the end of 68!
"IF" you want to do some slow smooth running - get in touch with me - I will keep you grounded! and running slow.
