Yesterday I went to St Catherine's Ontario, to Cathy Hopkin's house. She talk to our group about the Comrades Marathon last year and this last weekend hosted a party for past and first time Comrades people. What a great time talking to people who have done this race and also to people, who will try for their first time on May 31st 2016!! GREAT KARMA - thanks Cathy for your hospitality. These Ultra Marathoners are really friendly people. Two (2) of the young ladies there finished Comrades in 8:13 = close to 6 minute pace. Steve, another seasoned Comrades runner (he did the "up" in 2013 = hot year - in 10.5 hours) They were all free with their advice and stories. The advice that I heard was to make sure that you train for strength since the climbing is the hardest part - distance will be easier (not easy), however the climbs are long and hard - best to hit the gym, ride a bike to strengthen the legs and run hills to get use to it!!!! Steve did most of his training on a 2 mile hill leading up to Brock monument, in Niagara on the Lake - running up and down - We will be off to Arkona right after the MoRun weekend!!! Tim Westaway, Fred U, Myself and hopefully Dr. Ken Walker will be going from Sarnia - It should be quite the experience - it's time to look for flights, places to stay and sites to see in SA - stay tuned for more information as the training progresses. BTW - this next trip to Comrades will be Cathy's 6th - well on her way to get a green bib = 10 times running in a row!!!!!! Want to learn more - see this link http://www.comrades.com/
One last piece of information for this week - about running form. I purchased a new running "gadget" - a foot pod that can tell you your cadence, the way your foot hits the ground = hard or soft, if you heal strike or run on your toes, plus how far you go and your "runficency" = some neat stuff. There are some gliches but I am talking to their support staff to work it out - the best part is that this device is $25 only and can really help you improve your running. Please have a look at the site and see what you think. I will be coming back with more information - I like it - certainly cheaper than a watch and "IF" it will help correct a slow cadence ot heel strike, it will be worth it. ( you do NOT need to run with your phone with this one!) http://milestonepod.com/
