(Lots happening this week so this is a bit long.....perhaps you might want to have a cup of coffee first or take a power nap before reading !!)
I don't know if it's just me, but I think we must have skipped a part of fall.....seems like one day I was running in shorts and a t-shirt, and the next day I was running with a jacket, tights and gloves. On the plus side, runners are a resilient lot and we adapt...fall is here....and winter is coming....but we're up for the challenge!!
The racing season is winding down but this was another busy week. Congratulations to the FoF ladies who completed the London Women's Half Marathon....well done! And congrats also go out to Stefania, who completed the New York Marathon today, realizing her dream. We'd also like to congratulate the runners from Sarnia who participated in the New York City and Road To Hope Marathons.
It was great to see everyone who came to the Feet on Fire 2nd anniversary celebration this week. There were some faces we hadn't seen in a while and we were able to share stories and memories of the past two years.
Although the racing season isn't quite over yet (3 weeks to Mo' !!) it's a great time of the year to reflect and take stock of where we are....hence this week's quote.
We encourage everyone to really give thought to where running fits into their lives. It's great to have ambitious goals, but if these don't match the time you have available to train, you'll likely end up being frustrated or discouraged, and unlikely to meet your goals. Although we challenge everyone to be the best runner they can be, this doesn't mean that everyone has to run a marathon! For many, competing at the 5k distance is a great way to stay fit, socialize with your friends and challenge yourself... and that same logic can be applied to any distance. We'll be rolling out new training programs shortly and will have plans to fit pretty much any distance, so please give some thought to your goals for next year. We're happy to sit down with anyone who'd like to discuss these with us.....simply shoot us an email and we'll make it happen!
Please check our Training Programs Page and you'll find 10k Fitness, 16k Fitness and 6 Week Aerobic Base Training programs. One of these should fit everyone's needs for the next several weeks. Early in December we'll start training programs for Around the Bay, the Hypo Half and those running early spring marathons. If anyone has questions about any of these programs, please let us know. If you have any friends who'd like to join us and train for any 5 or 10k's, ATB, the Hypo Half or a spring half / full marathon, please pass the word on.
It was great over the last few weeks, hearing everyone share stories from the races that they'd participated in. If you'd like to get an insight into what some of the elite runners felt about some of those very same races, check out the blogs / websites of Lanni Marchant, Reid Coolsaet, Eric Gillis, and Hilary Stellingwerf. I'm clearly addicted to this stuff myself, but I found it pretty interesting reading. For example, it's nice to know that a world class athlete like Hilary, running her first half marathon, found the idea of having to wolf down a gel and drink on the run, a real challenge, and that she hasn't quite mastered it yet! You can find these links on the Resources page of this site, near the bottom.
This week we WILL have a clinic talk on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. It will be a brief race recap, followed by a discussion of the programs we'll be offering. If there is sufficient time, we might have a brief discussion of some of the training terms we use, particularly for the newbies.
There is a new password this month.....which will be included in the weekly email.
Plans for Mo' Run Sarnia are progressing well....lots of registrations rolling in but be sure to SPREAD THE WORD. Tell your family, friends and co-workers.....we're looking forward to an awesome event and want to share the fun with everyone! We're still looking for volunteers so if you'd like to help out, please send us an email.
A special thanks goes out to Susan Beach, who will be filling in as group leader for the C25k runners while Dick is away.....much appreciated Susan!
And last but certainly not least, we'd like to wish good luck to Dick Felton, who will be running the Athens Marathon next week....FoF's own energizer bunny!
Have a great week....lot's Mo' fun ahead!!
