Laura Fleshman, 2012 US 5000M Champion
We had another beautiful week of running weather.....and it's been at least 7 or 8 days since we've been rained on....definitely reasons to smile!
This is a great point in the running season for reflection. Many of you have the Crim coming up next week, while others are well into your training programs for your half or full marathons. That's a pleasant way of acknowledging that some of the workouts are getting tougher....for most of you the distances, speeds or both are increasing.
That's part of the reason for this week's quote. Some of your runs are easy (should I say easier ?) while some of them are very challenging. The purpose of these runs is to prepare you for your goal race, because on that day, when you give it your all, it WILL be challenging. August and September's tough training runs WILL prepare both PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY for your races.....KNOW that and BELIEVE that and the tough workouts will at least seem worthwhile, if not a little easier.
Because of the higher demands being placed on your bodies right now, please LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. If you haven't been faithfully icing trouble spots after runs, stretching, cross training or taking epsom salts baths etc, please start doing any or all of these things. They will pay dividends in reducing the likelihood of injury or minimizing some of those nagging sore spots. It's normal to have some aches and pains but if it's getting beyond that stage (talk to us about how to differentiate), please see a professional. Now is the time to deal with these minor problems before they become serious.
Although it's not reflected in This Week at FoF, some of you running the Crim should cut back on this week's Saturday long run. We'd suggest a maximum of 20k for those folks on marathon programs and 18k for those of you on HM programs. If you have any questions about this, PLEASE talk to us at one of the runs or send us an email.
We're also in the very early planning stages for Mo' Run Sarnia 2013. If anyone would like to help out with the organization of this worthwhile event, please let us know.
Have a great week!
